When I returned in earnest to the realm of G.I. Joe five years ago -- meaning, when I resumed buying the toy line and not just the comic books -- no Web site provided a better entree for me into the web and news side of the hobby than GeneralsJoes.com.
Justin's Vermont home base is in a Joe and Cobra hotbed, not far from Snow Job's birthplace of Rutland and the original Cobra headquarters in Springfield. So it's understandable that he has incredible connections and intel on the Joe team.
Tonight he offers an erudite take on GIJoegraphy.com. We appreciate it greatly. Thanks GeneralsJoes!

GIJoegraphy.com was introduced to the world last night in the best way possible -- through the Season 2 premier of the fantastic Flag Points podcast! Dave, Don and Rob are some of my favorite people in the hobby, and frankly, some of my favorite people anywhere. Smart, funny, and cool is the way they go through life.

Give Episode 33 a listen to learn more about the ideas behind and construction of the map, the challenges faced to create it, and what's in the future for the site. You'll also hear the informative, entertaining and often hilarious regular features such as "Scaled Up", "Knock it Off", and "Joe Memories". Plus that always fresh musical soundtrack. Yo Joe!

WELCOME TO GIJOEGRAPHY.COM

In its 31-year existence as the world's preeminent 3 3/4-inch action figure and vehicle line, G.I. Joe has been ripe for news, analysis and nostalgia. Its source material, whether drawn from file card, comic, cartoon or other mythos, seems limitless. But I can't remember seeing attention paid to one of the most realistic aspects of this 10-minutes-into-the-future military fantasy: that the vast majority of G.I. Joe characters hail from real places on the U.S. -- and in some cases international -- map.

This web site is intended to fill that space. It is meant to put the place into your playsets, to explore the geography of the Joe team's personal and tactical history. The centerpiece of the site is the map of North America that details the birthplace of every Joe from the vintage (1982-94) era, as well as specific places that figured prominently in the Marvel Comics and Sunbow animation storylines. The map, much like this site, is expected to be in constant evolution. There is not a planned publication schedule, other than the general principle that I would like to present a new illustrated story in this blog space on a weekly basis.

This blog is the place to dig deeper into the geography, to reveal fun facts and explore the reality and fantasy of G.I. Joe and Cobra geography. Where exactly is Borovia? What's the story behind Trucial Abysmia? Is the reason we have all these "Springfields" from coast-to-coast simply because it's an easy place name, or are they a network resulting from one of Cobra's most elaborate plots? Much of what you read here each week will be based on research, and plenty will be fan fiction. But I plan for all of it to be entertaining.

I am a trained journalist, geographer and cartographer with an allegiance to the 3 3/4 G.I. Joe brand and a great appreciation for the line's art, design and mythos. I'd love to read a treatise on the creation of vehicle logos like the circular ones found on the Dragonfly XH-1 helicopter or Killer W.H.A.L.E. hovercraft, but I'm not sure of the life cycle of a site built on the subject of vintage Joe vehicle insignias. So instead, I present GIJoegraphy.com, a place that I hope brings G.I. Joe fans great enjoyment.

My first action figure was a 12-inch Six-Million Dollar Man. Then came Obi-Wan Kenobi, C-3PO and R2-D2. Luke Skywalker V.1 was my first toy hunting prey. But when 3 3/4 G.I. Joes arrived in 1982, it began a lifelong fascination that continues today. I hope you enjoy the site, and if you have source material, ideas, or other information to share, email me at dan@gijoegraphy.com
